Golf in a pinball machine describes the challenge Rory McIlroy faces at Royal Birkdale, where a heatwave has turned the course into a yellow brick road of unpredictable bounces. The 50th anniversary of Seve Ballesteros’s emergence brings an uncanny parallel: firm, fiery, and penal rough defines this Open.
Royal Birkdale’s Scorched Conditions
Less green and pleasant land, more yellow brick road. Away from putting surfaces lashed with water, the impact of a heatwave is laid bare. This major will surely be defined by course condition. McIlroy paid a scouting visit weeks ago, discovering penal rough and a premium on keeping the ball on short grass.

The Pinball Effect
Concrete-like surfaces make it fiendishly difficult to control the ball. Think golf in a pinball machine. Branden Grace plotted and spun his way to a major record 62 here nine years ago, but the contrast in environment as the Open returns could not be more stark.
| Year | Player | Score | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1976 | Seve Ballesteros | 74 (final round) | Firm links |
| 2006 | Tiger Woods | Won | Scorched Hoylake |
| 2017 | Branden Grace | 62 | Soft fairways |
| 2024 | Rory McIlroy | TBD | Baked Birkdale |
McIlroy’s Quest for Major Glory on a Scorched Course
As a grand slam winner, McIlroy can rightly claim to have passed almost every examination. What is missing is major glory on a burnt layout. He came agonizingly close at the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst and a year earlier was edged aside in the same tournament at a burnt Los Angeles course.
- McIlroy shot 61 at Royal Portrush before Woods’s 2006 Hoylake win.
- Firm, fiery, unpredictable Opens are the finest sporting feasts.
- Players must adapt to concrete-like surfaces and penal rough.
