Pitbull concert forces historic Champions League qualifier in Lithuania to move, as FK Kauno Zalgiris faces a venue crisis after booking the US rapper at their stadium. The Toplyga champions secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Kosovo’s Dritam on Tuesday, advancing to the second qualifying round with a 4-3 aggregate victory and earning around €1.7m in prize money. However, the club had already scheduled a Pitbull concert at their 15,000-seater Darius and Girenas Stadium for 31 July, leaving them scrambling for an alternative venue for the second leg against Faroe Islands champions KI.
Why the Pitbull Concert Disrupted Champions League Plans
The scheduling clash stems from Zalgiris’s unexpected success in Europe. The club, best known as Lithuania’s most decorated basketball franchise, had not anticipated advancing so far and booked the concert as a revenue source. Now, the team must play in Jonava, a town 30km away, at a stadium holding just over 2,500 people. Head coach Zeljko Sopic expressed frustration, calling the situation “because of a concert by some dog or somebody.”

Attempts to Swap Legs Fail
Zalgiris tried to swap the legs to play at home first, but this proved impossible. The Faroe Islands have national holidays on 28-29 July (St Olav’s Day), and another Faroese club, HB, is scheduled to play Motherwell in the Conference League on 30 July, straining local policing resources. This forced Zalgiris to relocate to Jonava, significantly reducing their home advantage.
Impact on the Team and Revenue
The venue change could affect Zalgiris’s performance and fan support. Playing in a 2,500-seat stadium versus a 15,000-seat arena limits attendance and atmosphere. Club chair Mantas Kalnietis noted that concerts like Pitbull’s are a major revenue source for the stadium and city residents. “Ultimately the income generated strengthens our entity,” he said, balancing the financial benefits against the sporting disruption.
