China Develops Robot That Will Impregnate Couples Who Can't Have Children 2026

Chinese science and technology media outlet Kuai Ke Zhi published an interview on the 8th of the month with Zhang Qifeng, a PhD student at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, who is developing the pregnancy robot. He himself envisions the robot not as an incubator, but as a humanoid, with a womb that can reproduce the entire process, from conception to delivery.

The most basic element of the robot is of course the artificial uterus, within which the fetus develops, grows and is nourished. She will be filled with amniotic fluid and will receive nutrients through a tube she will have. Dr. Zhang adds:

"Artificial womb technology is already at a mature stage and now needs to be implanted into the robot's abdomen so that a real person and the robot can interact to achieve pregnancy, allowing the embryo to grow inside."

Dr. Zhang Qifeng

Currently, artificial wombs act like incubators, allowing premature embryos to develop in a similar manner and environment to that of the womb. To perfect a real pregnancy inside an artificial womb, more work is needed. Unfortunately, the interview did not provide more information about how eggs and sperm are fertilized and implanted in the uterus.

Regarding the ethical and legal issues, he said: "We have held a discussion forum with the authorities in Guangdong province and put forward relevant proposals while discussing policy and legislation."

This technology can help many couples who cannot have children, but the discussion in society about the moral part has already started. Obviously, the technology in question does not aim to replace mothers, but to help women who cannot conceive, to have children. It remains to be seen how society will accept it.
