Australia's outrage over Israel's refusal to investigate the killing of Gaza aid workers has escalated diplomatic tensions, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong calling the decision 'especially insulting' on World Humanitarian Day. The April 2024 strike on a World Central Kitchen convoy killed Australian Zomi Frankcom and six colleagues, prompting formal talks with Israel's ambassador to Australia, Hillel Newman, who offered no apology and cited legal implications.
Background: The World Central Kitchen Strike
The convoy, clearly marked with the aid group's logo on the roofs, was struck in a series of targeted attacks despite prior coordination with the Israeli military. The IDF claimed it mistook individuals for armed Hamas operatives and that the convoy deviated from the agreed route. Two officers were removed and three reprimanded, but a military court found no criminal liability.

IDF's Decision and Australia's Response
Israel's ambassador, Hillel Newman, insisted the process was appropriate, stating, 'A court came to decision that there's no criminal liability, so we're not going to lynch people on the streets.' He also noted 'a lot of haters of Israel in Australia.' In response, Wong directed Australia's ambassador to Israel, Neil Hawkins, to convey the government's views directly, as Canberra considers next steps.

|---|---|---|
| Investigation | No criminal probe; administrative actions only | Demands criminal investigation and accountability |
