The North Sydney Olympic pool has been forced to shut temporarily just days after its much-hyped reopening following a $122m redevelopment. The closure, caused by a power supply problem, has left the community disappointed and raised questions about the project's long-awaited completion.
The iconic art deco pool, which first opened in 1936, was closed for major refurbishment and was originally slated to reopen in 2022. However, delays and ballooning costs pushed the reopening to last week, only for the celebrations to be cut short by a technical issue.

Why Did the Pool Close Again?
According to North Sydney Council, staff detected a power supply problem to the Olympic pool late on Thursday afternoon. The council made the decision to temporarily shut the complex and empty the pool entirely while investigations and necessary works are carried out.
A council spokesperson said, “Contractors and technical specialists have been working throughout the night to resolve the issue and complete the works as quickly as possible. The pool will reopen once the works are complete.” No timeline has been provided for when the pool might reopen.
Impact on Visitors and Programs
The closure affects not just the pool but also the gym, Learn to Swim classes, and group fitness sessions. The council has assured that those with bookings will be contacted about rescheduling. More than 10,000 people visited during the free opening weekend, and 5,000 took part in preview tours, making the shutdown particularly disheartening.
Comparing the Original Timeline vs. Actual Reopening
The project faced multiple setbacks, as shown in the table below:
| Milestone | Original Plan | Actual Date |
|---|---|---|
| Pool Closure | 2019 | 2019 |
| Reopening | 2022 | 2025 (briefly) |
| Final Cost | Estimated $80m | $122m |
The cost overrun of over 50% and the extended timeline have been a source of frustration for the community and local officials.
Key Takeaways from the Closure
- Power issue detected by staff led to immediate closure for safety.
- No reopening date has been announced yet.
- All pool, gym, and class programs are suspended until further notice.
- Council apologizes for the disruption and promises updates.
What This Means for Swimmers and the Community
For local residents and athletes who have long awaited the pool's return, this temporary closure is a setback. The pool has been a training ground for countless elite swimmers, and its availability is crucial for both recreational and competitive use.
The council has emphasized that the pool will reopen once the issue is resolved, but until then, swimmers are advised to check the official website for updates. The community's patience is being tested, but safety remains the top priority.
