The NT minister's groundwater claim linking underground water to Earth's magnetic poles has drawn widespread criticism from scientists and environmental groups. Robyn Cahill, the Northern Territory minister for trade and business, argued that using more groundwater could prevent a geomagnetic reversal. Experts quickly debunked her remarks as scientifically inaccurate.
What Did the NT Minister Say?
Speaking in Darwin, Cahill promoted the territory as a future datacentre hub, citing abundant subterranean water supplies. She suggested that excess groundwater in the wet season could shift Earth's axis, potentially causing the poles to flip. "We need to use some of it otherwise we might find ourselves flipping the poles again," she stated.

Scientific Rebuttal
Dr. Dylan Irvine, a groundwater hydrology expert at Charles Darwin University, dismissed the idea. "We're not at risk of the poles flipping," he told ABC Darwin. Kirsty Howey, executive director of the Environment Centre NT, called the claim "completely cooked" and warned that regulators lack basic water science understanding.
| Claim | Scientific Reality |
|---|---|
| Groundwater impacts Earth's axis | No known mechanism; groundwater mass is negligible relative to Earth's rotation |
| Poles could flip if water is not used | Geomagnetic reversals occur over millennia, unrelated to groundwater |
| NT's wet season alters axis | Seasonal water redistribution has minuscule effect, not enough to cause pole reversal |
Key Takeaways
- The NT's groundwater policy push is based on flawed science.
- Geomagnetic reversals are natural, rare events driven by Earth's core dynamics.
- Experts urge reliance on peer-reviewed hydrology and geophysics.
- Datacentre water usage must be assessed sustainably, not with false claims.
FAQ
Can groundwater really cause Earth's magnetic poles to flip?
No. Geomagnetic reversals are caused by changes in the Earth's liquid outer core, not by groundwater distribution. Scientists confirm there is no credible link.
What did the NT minister actually claim?
Robyn Cahill said that too much groundwater in the wet season could affect Earth's axis and lead to a pole flip, advocating more groundwater use to prevent this.
Why are datacentres relevant to this controversy?
Cahill's remarks were part of a push to attract datacentres to the Northern Territory. Datacentres consume large volumes of water for cooling, and the minister used the pole-flip claim to justify expanded groundwater extraction.
The incident highlights the importance of evidence-based policy in natural resource management. As the NT government pursues economic growth, scientists call for rigorous oversight rather than misleading narratives about Earth's systems.
