Bridget Phillipson has been appointed Labour party chair by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, placing her at the forefront of Labour’s campaign to win the next general election. The former education secretary, who oversaw a major overhaul in special educational needs and disabilities (Send) provision in England, now steps into a role previously held by prominent Labour figures such as Harriet Harman, Angela Rayner, and Tom Watson.
Background of the Appointment
Phillipson was sacked as education secretary last week and replaced by key Burnham ally Lucy Powell. However, she retained her cabinet position as women and equalities minister, marking the first time that traditionally minor role has been included as a standalone cabinet post. Now, as Labour party chair, she replaces Anna Turley, who moved to a new ministerial role in the Home Office after last week’s government reshuffle.

Key Responsibilities as Party Chair
The prime minister stated that Phillipson will drive culture change within the party and work closely with him and Lucy Powell. “She will play a vital role in ensuring the Labour party is match fit for the next election,” Burnham said. The appointment is widely seen as an olive branch to members of the previous government, reflecting Burnham’s commitment to drawing on the full breadth of talent across Labour as he builds one united team.
