The Cockroach movement in India has drawn thousands of young protesters to the streets of central Delhi, demanding the resignation of the education minister and sweeping reform of a corrupt education system. Despite violent police crackdowns, including baton charges and teargas, demonstrators like 25-year-old Taru remain defiant, wearing bicycle helmets for protection and vowing to stay until their demands are met. This unprecedented youth-led expression of dissent against the ruling government shows no sign of backing down.
Origins and Goals of the Cockroach Janta Party
The movement, organized by the self-styled Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), emerged from widespread frustration with India's education system, which protesters describe as broken and riddled with corruption. Their primary demand is the resignation of the education minister, whom they hold responsible for policy failures. The CJP's name symbolizes resilience—much like cockroaches, they claim they cannot be crushed or silenced.

Police Response and Controversy
On Monday, what began as a peaceful assembly quickly turned violent when Delhi police denied protesters permission to march on parliament. Authorities erected barricades, shut down the internet, and kettled the crowd into a restricted area. Police then used batons and teargas, claiming they were responding to agitation. However, organizers and witnesses allege unprovoked attacks, including against women and children. At least 60 people were injured, and one protester remains on a ventilator in intensive care.

Youth Resilience and the Spirit of the Movement
Despite the brutality, protesters remain resolute. Taru, who was beaten during Monday's crackdown, returned Tuesday with a helmet and renewed determination. "We are not scared of them and we won't run away, no matter what they do," she said. The movement has gained momentum through social media, with hashtags like #CockroachJanta trending nationwide.
