The Del Monte farm in Kenya continues to be a site of violence and loss, as bereaved families and politicians raise alarm over killings despite the multinational food company hiring British security firm G4S to replace its in-house team. The Guardian previously exposed brutal assaults and deaths on the farm, which spans at least 40 square kilometers. Now, new incidents have emerged, highlighting ongoing human rights concerns.
Background of the Del Monte Farm Security Crisis
In 2023, the Guardian revealed allegations about the killing of four men at the farm over a decade. Following these reports, Del Monte Kenya outsourced all security to a team of 270 G4S guards in March 2024. Wayne Cooke, then acting managing director, stated: “The safety and security of each individual within our company and the surrounding community are our top priority.” However, the transition has not stopped the violence.

Recent Killings Involving G4S Guards
Three men have been killed in separate incidents over the past year allegedly involving G4S guards. Stephen Marubu Kibandi, 34, was shot in the chest from close range by a police officer working alongside G4S guards last August. Witnesses claim he had his hands up in surrender before being shot. His brother, Haron Kame Kibandi, 27, died in April after being struck on the head by stones thrown by G4S guards and falling from a motorbike. A third man, Michael Muiruri, 31, was killed after being knocked off a motorbike by a G4S pickup truck.
Comparison of Security Measures Before and After G4S
| Security Provider | Incidents Reported | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| In-house security (pre-2024) | Multiple killings and assaults | Public outcry and Guardian investigation |
| G4S (post-March 2024) | Three additional deaths | Continued human rights concerns |
The Kenyan police have been working with G4S to guard the site, setting up a “critical infrastructure” presence. Del Monte Kenya appointed a new manager to address its “human rights challenges,” but families say little has changed.
