Anthony Fauci's newly released diaries describe News Corp journalist Sharri Markson's Covid-19 lab leak investigation as a “bunch of nonsense,” igniting fresh debate over pandemic origins. The former chief medical adviser's private entries, published amid a Senate subpoena, directly challenge the credibility of Markson's reporting in The Australian. This article breaks down the key claims, Fauci's rebuttals, and the broader implications for Covid-19 origin research.
Fauci's Diaries Target Markson's Lab Leak Reporting
In his pandemic-era journal entries, Fauci wrote that Markson's May 2021 article, which alleged Chinese military scientists discussed weaponizing coronaviruses, “does not make any sense.” He questioned the logic of creating an agent that could infect one's own population, calling the report “something wrong” and vowing to follow up. The diaries, spanning 1,141 pages, were released by Republican Senator Rand Paul ahead of a contentious Senate hearing.

Guardian Australia later exposed that the “chilling” document cited in Markson's story was based on a discredited 2015 book of conspiracy theories, freely available online. This revelation undermines the factual foundation of the lab leak narrative as presented by Markson, though she has defended her reporting as rigorous investigative journalism.
Key Claims vs. Evidence: A Comparative Analysis
| Claim by Markson | Evidence Presented | Fauci's Response |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese military scientists weaponized coronaviruses | Discredited 2015 book, no verified documents | “Bunch of nonsense,” illogical threat |
| Lab leak from Wuhan Institute of Virology | Unproven theory, no conclusive data | No evidence, calls for scientific inquiry |
| Third world war with biological weapons | Speculative, not supported by intelligence | Dismissed as baseless speculation |
The Senate Hearing and Fauci's Defiance
At Wednesday's hearing, Fauci refused to answer questions, accusing Senator Paul of an “unhinged” campaign lobbying for his imprisonment. This marks a continuation of Paul's years-long support for the lab leak theory, which Fauci has consistently rejected. The confrontation highlights the politicization of pandemic origin science, with Fauci maintaining that natural spillover remains the most likely explanation.
Why This Matters for Public Trust
The clash between Fauci's diaries and Markson's reporting underscores the need for evidence-based journalism. When media outlets amplify unverified claims, they risk eroding public trust in both science and the press. For readers, this case serves as a reminder to critically evaluate sources, especially on complex issues like pandemic origins.
Key Takeaways
- Fauci's diaries directly refute Markson's lab leak investigation as “nonsense.”

- Senator Paul's subpoena and hearing reflect ongoing political tensions over Covid origins.
- Scientific consensus still favors natural spillover, but research continues.
- Media literacy is crucial to avoid misinformation on pandemic topics.
