Is Glasgow's 25-year gangland feud finally over? The recent lull in violence suggests a possible end to one of Scotland's most deadly criminal wars, marking a significant shift in organized crime dynamics. This article delves into the factors behind the downturn and what it means for the future.
The Lyons-Daniels Feud: A Bloody History
For over two decades, the Lyons and Daniels families have been locked in a brutal conflict that has claimed numerous lives and terrorized communities. The feud, rooted in drug trafficking and territorial disputes, escalated into a series of assassinations, firebombings, and public shootings. The murder of Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan in Fuengirola last year was a stark reminder of the violence that has plagued these families.

According to Police Scotland, the recent six-month spell of attacks was particularly intense, but now there has been a "clear and obvious downturn of activity." This shift has led to speculation that the war may finally be over, with police citing "the resolution of differences within the serious and organised crime community."
Key Factors Behind the Downturn
Several elements have contributed to the apparent peace. Police intervention, increased pressure from law enforcement, and a strategic change by the gangs themselves are all likely factors. Karyn McCluskey, a pioneer of Scotland's Violence Reduction Unit, notes that "if you're a good organised crime group, you don't commit violence, because that's just what brings the police down on you."
The arrest of 64 people in less than a year has also weakened the gangs' ability to operate, making continued violence less feasible. This combination of pressure and strategic recalibration may have led to a fragile truce.
Comparison of Violence Before and After
| Period | Incidents | Arrests |
|---|---|---|
| Last 6 months (peak) | High (multiple attacks) | 64 |
| Recent months | Low (downturn) | Not disclosed |
The table illustrates the stark contrast between the peak of violence and the current lull, highlighting the effectiveness of police operations.
What This Means for Organized Crime in Scotland
If the feud is indeed over, it could reshape the criminal landscape in Scotland. The vacuum left by the Lyons and Daniels may lead to new power struggles, but it also presents an opportunity for communities to heal. Police Scotland remains cautious, emphasizing that the downturn is "multi-factorial" and could be temporary.
