Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day hunger strike on Friday, as youth-led protests continued to spread across the country. The protest movement, led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), demands accountability for widespread exam paper leaks that affected 2 million students and have been linked to multiple suicides.
Background of the Hunger Strike and Protests
Wangchuk began fasting in June to support the CJP's call for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The exam leaks, which occurred in May, exposed systemic failures in India's examination system. The CJP has organized mass protests in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata, with turnouts exceeding 100,000 in some locations.

Comparative Analysis: Hunger Strikes in Indian History
| Activist | Duration of Hunger Strike | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Mahatma Gandhi | 21 days (longest) | Key victories in India's independence movement |
| Sonam Wangchuk | 26 days | Written government assurances on exam system accountability |
| Other Indian activists | Varies (typically 10–30 days) | Policy changes or public awareness |
Wangchuk's 26-day fast surpasses Gandhi's longest hunger strike. Prime Minister Modi urged the activist to follow medical advice and regain lost weight.
Continued Protests and Government Response
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke thanked Wangchuk for his sacrifice but stated that protests will continue until Pradhan resigns. “We won’t let Sonam sir’s sacrifice go in vain,” Dipke added. The government has agreed to meet CJP leaders at a “neutral location” to discuss their demands, though no breakthrough has been reported.
Protests erupted across India on Friday, with large demonstrations in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Nagpur, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata. CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ra confirmed that the movement remains active.
