This attack comes despite a ceasefire deal signed in October between Israel and Hamas, which aimed to end the two-year-long war. Since the ceasefire took effect, at least 1,123 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the health ministry.
Casualties and Humanitarian Impact
The Gaza health ministry maintains detailed casualty records widely regarded as reliable by UN agencies and independent experts. Since the war began on October 7, 2023, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed, including those since the ceasefire. The conflict started after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.
An independent UN inquiry has found that Israel continues to commit genocide by deliberately targeting Palestinian children in Gaza. Militants have also carried out shooting attacks on Israeli troops, prompting Israeli airstrikes in response.
