The International Criminal Court's prosecutor Karim Khan has been ousted after member states voted overwhelmingly to remove him over allegations of sexual abuse. This unprecedented move concludes a damaging two-year saga for the court and leaves its prosecution division in turmoil.
Background of the Ousting
Karim Khan, a prominent British barrister, was elected in 2021 to a nine-year term as the ICC's chief prosecutor. During his tenure, he sought arrest warrants for high-profile figures including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, raising the court's profile but also drawing criticism from major powers.

The allegations against Khan were made by a woman who worked for him at the ICC. She claimed he engaged in coercive and non-consensual sexual behavior over an extended period. Khan has repeatedly denied all allegations, and his lawyers have criticized the disciplinary process as procedurally unfair.
The Disciplinary Process and Vote
In June, the ICC's governing body concluded that Khan had committed serious misconduct in connection to the abuse claims. Last month, the executive committee suspended him. On Friday, member states voted at a special meeting at UN headquarters in New York: 82 of the 125 member states voted in favor of removal, an unprecedented outcome in ICC history.

Impact on the ICC
The removal of Khan does not affect the arrest warrants already issued by judges for Putin and Netanyahu. However, the court's 400-person prosecution division has been left bruised by the protracted scandal. The ICC now faces a leadership vacuum and a need to restore credibility.
