Lindsey Graham's hawkish ideology leaves a legacy of destruction, as the sudden death of the South Carolina senator over the weekend has sparked tributes from both Republicans and Democrats. Donald Trump ordered flags at half-staff, while Senator Dick Durbin praised Graham as a bipartisan ally, and Senator Adam Schiff lauded his humor. Yet beneath this bipartisan veneer lies a concrete record of pushing for aggressive US foreign policy and unwavering support for Israel, which has shaped global conflicts.
The Hawkish Foreign Policy Push
Graham's influence on US foreign policy was immense, as noted by The Wall Street Journal. He consistently advocated for projecting American power abroad, starting with his early calls to invade Iraq in 2002. “We’re looking at going after Saddam Hussein, not to contain him, but to replace him,” Graham said, a stance that led to the 2003 invasion and its disastrous aftermath. His uncritical devotion to Israel further fueled his hawkish agenda, with Aipac honoring him as a “great friend and true champion of the U.S.-Israel relationship.”
