MLS New Commissioner Priorities: Broadcast, Roster, and Growth 2026

The MLS new commissioner faces a pivotal moment as the league charts its future. From media deals to roster rules, the priorities set now will shape the next era of American soccer. This article breaks down the top five challenges and opportunities awaiting Larry Berg when he takes office on January 1.

Broadcast Future: The Apple Deal and Beyond

The current streaming partnership with Apple, which pays MLS $250 million annually, runs through the 2028-29 season. However, as the league enters its fourth year with Apple, questions about viewership and content depth are mounting. With fewer cameras at matches and limited ancillary programming, the new commissioner must decide whether to renew, renegotiate, or pivot to a new broadcast strategy.

According to Don Garber, MLS games average 120,000 unique viewers, but streamers rarely share full data. The 2026 World Cup on home soil could boost interest, yet the league needs a long-term plan that maximizes reach and revenue.

Roster Rules: Balancing Parity and Ambition

MLS has long used salary caps and designated players to maintain competitive balance. However, the new commissioner must address the growing gap between big-spending clubs and smaller markets. Revising roster rules could allow more flexibility for international stars while preserving the league's parity ethos.

Key considerations include increasing the salary cap, adjusting the number of designated players, and creating new mechanisms for youth development and homegrown talent.

Priorities for the New Commissioner

• Negotiate a new broadcast deal that expands audience and revenue.
• Modernize roster rules to attract top talent while maintaining fairness.
• Enhance fan engagement through digital and in-stadium experiences.
• Leverage the 2026 World Cup to grow the sport's popularity.
• Expand commercial partnerships and sponsorship opportunities.

Commercial Growth and Brand Positioning

As a self-proclaimed "challenger brand," MLS must continue to build its identity in a crowded sports market. The new commissioner will need to strengthen the league's brand, attract new sponsors, and grow international recognition.

Investment in grassroots soccer and youth academies will be critical to developing homegrown talent and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Fan Experience and Digital Innovation

With the rise of streaming and social media, MLS must innovate to keep fans engaged. The new commissioner should prioritize digital platforms, interactive content, and personalized experiences to attract younger audiences.

From augmented reality in stadiums to enhanced mobile apps, technology will play a key role in differentiating MLS from other leagues.

League Expansion and International Competitiveness

MLS continues to expand, with new teams and markets. However, the league must also compete on the international stage, particularly in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and against top European leagues. The new commissioner will need to balance domestic growth with global competitiveness.

Strategic partnerships with foreign leagues and clubs could provide pathways for player development and exposure.
