Netanyahu and Zelenskyy are arriving in Washington this week to attend Senator Lindsey Graham's funeral, seizing a rare opportunity to influence President Trump's foreign policy amid ongoing wars in Iran and Ukraine. Their simultaneous presence highlights the delicate balance of US global alliances.
Why Netanyahu and Zelenskyy Are Both in Washington
The funeral of Lindsey Graham, a former Republican senator and close ally to both leaders, provides a diplomatic backdrop for separate meetings with Trump. Netanyahu seeks to reaffirm US support for Israel's military campaign against Iran, while Zelenskyy aims to secure continued aid for Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression.

Both wars have entered critical phases. The Iran conflict, which began with US-Israeli strikes in February, remains stalled despite a ceasefire agreement signed last month. Meanwhile, Ukraine's counteroffensive has slowed, requiring fresh supplies from Washington.
Key Differences in US Policy Toward Iran and Ukraine
Trump's approach to each conflict has been erratic, causing uncertainty among allies. The table below compares current US stances.
| Aspect | Iran Conflict | Ukraine War |
|---|---|---|
| Current US Role | Direct military strikes and intermittent negotiations | Military aid packages and intelligence sharing |
| Ceasefire Status | 60-day MOU signed, but repeatedly violated | No formal ceasefire; ongoing fighting |
| Trump's Position | Initially supportive of Israeli strikes, then backed ceasefire, now threatening escalation | Consistently supportive of Ukraine, though aid packages are delayed |
| Key Ally | Israel (Netanyahu) | Ukraine (Zelenskyy) |
How the Funeral Could Shift Diplomatic Dynamics
Lindsey Graham was a key figure in building bipartisan support for both Israel and Ukraine. His passing removes a crucial advocate, but the funeral offers a chance for face-to-face diplomacy. Netanyahu and Zelenskyy are expected to present their cases in private sessions with Trump, possibly altering his next moves.
Observers note that Trump's recent comments calling Netanyahu “crazy” and his public repudiation of the Iran ceasefire signal growing friction. For Zelenskyy, the challenge is to keep Ukraine's needs on the agenda amid competing interests.
Key Takeaways

FAQ: Geopolitical Implications
Why are Netanyahu and Zelenskyy attending the same funeral?
Lindsey Graham was a close friend and advocate for both leaders. His funeral provides a neutral setting for them to interact with Trump and other US officials without the formality of a state visit.
What does Netanyahu want from Trump at this meeting?
Netanyahu seeks reassurance that the US will not pressure Israel to accept a ceasefire with Iran that undermines Israeli security. He also wants guarantees of continued military support for strikes against Iranian targets.
How might this affect the Ukraine war?
Zelenskyy will push for the release of a stalled $60 billion aid package and for Trump to maintain intelligence sharing. The outcome could determine Ukraine's ability to launch new offensives later this year.
What are the risks of Trump's zigzagging foreign policy?
Unpredictable US actions can embolden adversaries like Iran and Russia, while alienating allies. The funeral diplomacy may be a chance for Trump to clarify his long-term strategy.
The coming days in Washington will reveal whether Netanyahu and Zelenskyy can secure the commitments they need. For global markets and geopolitical stability, the outcomes of these meetings cannot be overstated.
