The toxic mix of dehumanizing rhetoric, widespread disinformation, and declining institutional trust is fueling a surge in political violence around the world, as recent high-profile attacks on elected officials demonstrate. From the killing of UK politician Ann Widdecombe to assassination attempts on Donald Trump, the trend is alarming experts and prompting urgent calls for action.
The Rising Tide of Attacks on Elected Officials
In the UK, the murder of Ann Widdecombe, a former government minister and Reform UK figure, has reignited debate after the killing of Labour MP Jo Cox by a far-right extremist in 2016 and the stabbing of Conservative MP David Amess by an Islamic State supporter in 2021. Across the Atlantic, threats against U.S. members of Congress exceeded 9,600 in 2021, and the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was attacked with a hammer by a rightwing conspiracy theorist in 2022. The 2024 assassination attempts on Donald Trump, including one where a bullet grazed his ear, underscore the severity of the crisis.

Key Drivers of Political Violence
Experts point to three main factors compounding the problem: dehumanizing rhetoric that labels opponents as enemies, declining trust in democratic institutions, and the rapid spread of disinformation through social media. These elements create an environment where violence becomes normalized, as seen in the firebombing of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's home and the shooting of a Minnesota lawmaker in 2024.
