Rome Heatwave Housing Crisis After Squat Eviction Leaves 200 in 2026

Rome authorities are scrambling to find homes for hundreds of people sleeping in tents in extreme heat after talks aimed at saving Italy’s most high-profile centre for housing and social assistance collapsed amid a crackdown by Giorgia Meloni’s government on squatted buildings. The approximately 400 evicted residents of Spin Time Labs, located in a 10-floor building in Rome’s Esquilino district occupied by grassroots groups since 2013, will not be allowed to move back in after its private owner refused Rome council’s offer to buy the property.

This Rome heatwave housing crisis has left more than 200 vulnerable individuals, including elderly and children, exposed to record temperatures. As the city grapples with this emergency, the political fallout intensifies over Italy’s approach to occupied buildings.

What Happened at Spin Time Labs?

Spin Time Labs was a self-managed social hub housing families, migrants, and low-income residents. On 29 July, a minor fire broke out, quickly extinguished by residents, but police locked the building for safety checks. Two judicial seizure orders followed—one from the owner’s legal battle and another linked to the fire. Residents were forced out, and the owner refused a council purchase offer, leaving many with no alternative shelter.

The squat eviction in Rome has now become a symbol of the government’s hardline stance on unauthorized occupations, which officials argue are dens for criminality. Critics point to the inconsistency: neofascist group CasaPound has occupied a state-owned building in the same neighborhood for over 20 years without similar enforcement.

Heatwave Emergency: Tents and Health Risks

With temperatures soaring above 35°C, families are sleeping in tents outside the locked building. One child was hospitalized with breathing difficulties, and many elderly residents suffer from chronic conditions. The Catholic charity Caritas and leftwing council members are providing water and medical aid, but long-term solutions remain elusive.

This Rome heatwave housing crisis underscores the urgent need for temporary housing and social support systems. The city council is exploring hotels and public buildings, but capacity is limited.
