Trump's threats to wipe out Iran are normalizing mass violence in modern politics, a dangerous trend that demands scrutiny. As the US and Iran clashed around the Strait of Hormuz last week, Donald Trump issued one of his typical threats. In an interview with a Fox News correspondent, Trump said Iran would be "totally wiped out as a country" if it retaliated for the latest wave of US air strikes. That threat by the US president to wipe out another country generated few headlines, even during a relatively slow news week by Trump administration standards. Trump has delivered this kind of warning so frequently over the past six months of his war against Iran that it hardly registers anymore. But it's important not to normalize Trump's threats, which are usually accompanied by promises to devastate Iran's infrastructure – vowing to destroy bridges and power plants. Those kinds of attacks would constitute war crimes under international law.
The Desensitization to Mass Violence
The president's repeated vows to obliterate Iran are usually written off by other western leaders and the news media as typical of Trump's bravado and unpredictability, but they have real-world consequences. By treating Trump's rhetoric as normal, US and western societies are becoming more desensitized to the idea of large-scale violence – including the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure – as a legitimate kind of warfare. And of course, Israel's war on Gaza has inured many in the western world to wholesale atrocities, including intense aerial bombardment.

Real-World Consequences of Normalized Rhetoric
When threats of mass violence become routine, the threshold for actual violence lowers. This normalization can lead to policy decisions that prioritize military aggression over diplomacy, endangering global stability. Moreover, it erodes the moral and legal frameworks that have been established to protect civilians in conflict zones.
Comparing Rhetoric and Reality
To understand the gravity of Trump's threats, consider the following comparison between rhetoric and potential reality:
| Rhetoric | Potential Reality |
|---|---|
| "Totally wiped out as a country" | Mass civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure |
| Destroy bridges and power plants | War crimes under international law |
| Repeated threats over six months | Desensitization of the public to violence |
Key Takeaways
- Trump's frequent threats to obliterate Iran are becoming normalized in political discourse.
- Such rhetoric desensitizes societies to mass violence and war crimes.
- Western leaders and media often dismiss these threats as bravado, ignoring real consequences.
- Normalization lowers the threshold for actual military aggression.
FAQ
Why are Trump's threats to Iran considered dangerous?
They normalize mass violence and could lead to war crimes, as they promise to destroy civilian infrastructure.
How does the media contribute to normalization?
By treating Trump's threats as typical bravado and not giving them the serious coverage they deserve, the media desensitizes the public.

Media and leaders must consistently condemn such rhetoric, highlight its illegality, and promote diplomacy over aggression.
In conclusion, Trump's threats to wipe out Iran are not just empty words; they are dangerous rhetoric that normalizes mass violence. It is crucial for the media, political leaders, and the public to recognize the gravity of these statements and resist the trend of desensitization.
