Donald Trump's renaming spree has escalated from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Ontario, and now he's eyeing New Mexico as 'New America.' This satirical trend raises questions about what iconic places might be next on his cartographic agenda.
The Gulf of America and Lake America: A New Geography

Trump's recent social media posts suggest a desire for an 'American Ocean,' hinting at potential renames for the Pacific or Atlantic. The whimsical nature of these proposals has sparked both amusement and concern among geographers and political commentators.
New Mexico to New America: The Latest Proposal
Most recently, Trump floated the idea of renaming New Mexico to New America, a move that would align with his vision of a more 'patriotic' map. Critics argue this erases state identity and history, while supporters see it as a unifying gesture.
If this trend continues, we might see states like New York becoming 'New Trump' or Washington D.C. as 'Trump City.' The possibilities are endless, and the debate over presidential renaming powers is heating up.
What Could Be Next on Trump's Renaming List?
Speculation is rife about future targets. Potential candidates include national parks, rivers, and even entire regions. Here’s a comparison of current names and their possible rebrands:
| Current Name | Proposed Rename | Likelihood |
|---|---|---|
| Gulf of Mexico | Gulf of America | High (already signed) |
| Lake Ontario | Lake America | Moderate (announced) |
| New Mexico | New America | Possible (floated) |
| Pacific Ocean | American Ocean | Low (joke) |

Legal experts question whether the president has the power to unilaterally rename geographical features, which typically requires congressional approval or international consensus. This could lead to legal challenges if Trump pursues further renames.
FAQ
Can the President legally rename states or geographical features?
The President can propose renames, but they typically require congressional approval or international recognition. Executive orders alone may not be sufficient for permanent changes.
What is the purpose of Trump's renaming spree?
Trump's renames seem aimed at promoting nationalism and asserting American identity, often in response to political conflicts or to rally his base.
Are these renames recognized internationally?
No, international bodies like the UN do not recognize these renames, so they have no effect outside the U.S. and are largely symbolic.
As Trump continues his renaming spree, the world watches with a mix of disbelief and amusement. Whether this is a serious policy or a political stunt, it has certainly put geography in the spotlight.
