Xisco Muñoz, the former Watford head coach, now leads Johor Darul Ta'zim on the verge of a world-record unbeaten streak. The Malaysian Super League side need just one more match without defeat to surpass the 109-game record set by Asec Mimosas in 1994. This remarkable achievement has put the Spanish manager in the spotlight once again.
The Journey from Watford to Johor
Xisco Muñoz was dismissed by Watford in 2021 after guiding them to the Premier League as Championship runners-up. His departure was controversial, but he has since taken on roles in Georgia, Cyprus, and Slovakia before landing in Malaysia. Now, he is on the cusp of history with Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), a club backed by the Malaysian royal family.

The Crown Prince, Tunku Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim, transformed JDT into a regional powerhouse. With state-of-the-art facilities and a 40,000-seater stadium, the club has dominated the Malaysian Super League. Xisco's appointment last summer was a statement of intent, and the results have been staggering.
The Unbeaten Record and Its Significance
JDT are currently on a 108-match unbeaten run in the league. A draw or win against Kuching on Friday would set a new world record of 109, breaking the benchmark held by Ivorian side Asec Mimosas for 32 years. Xisco acknowledges the difficulty, stating, "It's difficult to not lose one game. Something might happen – one day someone is sleeping."
This record is unique because it is not tied to the financial clout of European clubs. It is a testament to consistency, squad depth, and tactical discipline. Xisco believes this is a record that household names are unlikely to ever surpass, given the competitive nature of top leagues.
How JDT Built an Invincible Squad
The club's success is not accidental. JDT have invested heavily in scouting, youth development, and sports science. They have attracted top talent from across Asia and beyond, creating a squad that is both experienced and hungry. The Crown Prince's vision has been to make JDT the Manchester City of Malaysia, and the unbeaten run is a direct result of that ambition.
Xisco has instilled a winning mentality, emphasizing focus and preparation. He credits the players for their professionalism and the support staff for their meticulous planning. The team's ability to avoid complacency in every match is what sets them apart.

Comparison of Unbeaten Records

| Asec Mimosas | 109 | 1989–1994 | Ivorian Ligue 1 |
| Johor Darul Ta'zim | 108 (and counting) | 2021–present | Malaysian Super League |
The table above shows the current standing. JDT need just one more game to equal and then surpass the record. The pressure is immense, but Xisco remains calm, focusing on the process rather than the outcome.
