John McCabe's Symphonies 2 & 3 and Cello Concerto album review reveals writing of enormous colour and scope. Exploring McCabe's Orchestral Vision
John McCabe, who died in 2015, left a legacy of significant recordings of other composers' works, including his celebrated survey of Haydn's piano sonatas. However, his own compositions have remained under-recorded until now. This release fills crucial gaps.

Symphony No. 2 (1971): Tension and Cyclical Violence
The Symphony No. 2 is tense and edgy, musing on the cyclical nature of violence. Its sharp dissonances and driving rhythms create a gripping narrative that resonates with modern audiences.
Cello Concerto Songline (2007): Restless Searching
The cello concerto, titled Songline after ancient Aboriginal pathways, is restless in a different, searching way. Soloist Raphael Wallfisch captures the work's eloquence, with textures remaining clearly defined throughout.
Symphony No. 3 Hommages (1978): Lusher Soundworld
The Symphony No. 3, Hommages, inhabits a lusher soundworld, densely weaving nods to Haydn and Nielsen. One passage with muted strings and celeste could almost be Shostakovich reimagined by the Strauss of Der Rosenkavalier. The performances are vividly energised and expressive.
