Lost Landscapes Album Review: Hillborg's Sonic Imagination 2026

The Lost Landscapes album by Anders Hillborg is a stunning showcase of sonic imagination and luminous colours, as performed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. This collection of three works demonstrates Hillborg's stylistically eclectic approach, which resists easy categorization. From the opening glissandi to the final orchestral death spiral, the album takes listeners on a compelling journey through contemporary classical music.

Exploring Hillborg's Lost Landscapes: A Sonic Journey

The title track, Lost Landscapes, opens with signature glissandi that immediately capture attention. It features a filmic, jazz-inflected chase sequence and concludes with an orchestral death spiral. Violinist Pekka Kuusisto draws out the work's luminous colours and richly clustered harmonies, creating a vivid soundscape that is both dynamic and introspective.

The Strand Settings: A Song Cycle of Nature and Eroticism

Composed at the behest of Renée Fleming, Strand Settings is a four-movement song cycle set to texts by Canadian poet Mark Strand. The poetry infuses nature, the elements, and a certain forlorn eroticism, which Hillborg responds to with tonal and dynamic restraint. Gently pulsing strings with piquant woodwind and brass build atmospheric soundscapes over which Swedish soprano Ida Falk Winland spins haunting vocal lines in impeccable English.

Sound Atlas: Unusual Instruments and Microtonal Clashes

The final work, Sound Atlas, stylishly conducted by Brad Lubman, showcases Hillborg's sonic imagination and affection for unusual instruments. Here, the verrophone—invented by German musician Sascha Reckert—takes center stage. The instrument's rims are rubbed with wet fingers, similar to playing wine glasses, producing ethereal tones. The orchestra is often instructed to play slightly sharp or flat, their microtonal clashes lending the work a spectral quality. A pair of gleaming slow movements pitch into the glittering Vaporised Toy Pianos followed by the roiling Vortex before concluding with Hymn, a noble finale in the manner of Sibelius.
