Natalie Tran on Baking, Rice Cookers, and Bird Encounters 2026

Natalie Tran, the beloved comedian and content creator, shares her candid thoughts on baking shows, rice cookers, and unexpected bird encounters. In this exclusive interview, she reveals what it's really like behind the scenes of The Great Australian Bake Off and why she believes rice cookers should be mandatory.

Behind the Scenes of The Great Australian Bake Off

When asked about how much cake she actually gets to eat during filming, Tran laughs. "We are told to leave the cakes alone until after the judging has happened. It doesn’t always happen that way, but they don’t cap how much cake we eat after that." She describes the bakers as generous, often making extra portions for the hosts. "They put cut-offs on the side of the bench, and we go past and swipe them," she says, comparing the crew to "trash birds" in the wild.

The Rice Cooker Debate

Tran doubles down on her previous stance that it should be illegal not to own a rice cooker. "Yes, 100%. Jail time. No questions asked," she insists. She expresses disbelief at people who cook rice in a saucepan, calling it "blows my mind." When the interviewer admits to not owning a rice cooker, Tran is visibly pained. "But your life could be so much easier. I don’t understand why you live like that," she says, half-joking.

Bird Encounters and Neighborhood Drama

On her least favorite bird, Tran recounts a specific incident involving a bird standing on a magpie, screaming. "I ran up and was like 'Oi!' I don’t know why – like, why get involved in bird gang wars?" She admits to fearing the bird's memory, saying, "I had to pretend I was doing something else and walked past them going 'Oi, oi oi', hoping that the bird would go, 'Oh, that’s just a weird person.'"
