RL Stine's Pumpkinhead Review: Horror Traps Kid in Giant Pumpkin 2026

RL Stine's Pumpkinhead is a new horror movie that traps a kid inside a giant pumpkin, and this review explores the film's scares, twists, and family appeal. Adapted from a 1999 short story by Goosebumps creator RL Stine, this kid-friendly folk horror borrows from The Wicker Man, Stephen King, and Tim Burton, but does it deliver enough fresh scares? Let's dive into this Pumpkinhead review to find out if it's worth your Halloween movie night.

Plot Overview: A Family Moves to Redhaven

The story follows snotty skate rat Sam (Bean Reid) who moves to the farming town of Redhaven with his mom Cassie (Kendra Anderson) and older brother Finn (Seth Isaac Johnson). At the local harvest festival, they discover that ornery Farmer Palmer (Kevin McNulty) has miraculously restored the town's blighted fields with fresh bounty. Vexed by his new rural life, Sam steals Palmer's prize pumpkin, but when Finn returns it, he is magically trapped inside the giant fruit.

All the adults seem to forget Finn ever existed, leaving Sam until midnight on Halloween to break the curse. With new friend Becka (Adeline Lo), Sam infiltrates Palmer's house in search of an ancient grimoire, leading to a Scooby-Dooish adventure with a creepy hermit and a slasher scarecrow.

Horror Elements and Scare Level

The horror elements include a pustulant, soul-sucking pumpkin and a chittering scarecrow prowling the cornfields. These are just scary enough for younger viewers, but any lingering unease is quickly dispelled by pre-emptive self-awareness. The film is shot in sunny Netflixese, with peppily handled child performances, though Kevin McNulty is too anaemic as the pumpkin patriarch.

Writer-director Jem Garrard keeps the tone light, but the final twist is genuinely unsettling without any direct threat, gore, or gothic trappings. It's an interesting comeuppance for the wannabe independent Sam, but the film feels too straightforward and amiable until that twist.
