The Southport killer, Axel Rudakubana, has been transferred from Belmarsh prison to Broadmoor hospital, a high-security psychiatric facility, sparking outrage and concern from the victims' families. The move, confirmed by the Ministry of Justice, does not alter his 52-year life sentence for the murders of three young girls and the attempted murder of ten others.
Why Was the Southport Killer Transferred?
Authorities concluded that Rudakubana could not be managed safely in a prison environment. The transfer to Broadmoor, which houses some of the UK's most dangerous patients, was deemed necessary for his management. However, families were only informed via a letter on July 22, without detailed reasoning.

Lawyer Alleges Retraumatization
Chris Walker, the lawyer representing the families of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, expressed deep concern that Rudakubana is "trying to retraumatise the families from his cell." Walker noted a pattern emerging around the anniversary of the attack, which occurred on July 29, 2024, during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.
| Key Event | Date | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Attack at dance class | July 29, 2024 | Three children killed, eight others wounded |
| Transfer to Broadmoor | July 22, 2025 (notification) | From Belmarsh to high-security psychiatric hospital |
| Two-year anniversary | July 29, 2025 | Families fear further trauma |
Impact on Families and Public Reaction
Walker emphasized that there is "no suggestion" Rudakubana was under psychosis at the time of the murders. The lack of transparency around the transfer raises questions about manipulation by the inmate or poor handling by the government. Housing minister Sally Jameson, a former prison officer, confirmed the transfer but stressed the sentence remains unchanged.
