Toronto Zoo Welcomes Pygmy Hippo Calf, Boosting Endangered 2026

The Toronto Zoo has announced the birth of a female pygmy hippo calf, a significant event for the endangered species. The calf was born to 20-year-old mother Kindia after a labor that lasted several hours, marking her third successful birth. This joyful news brings hope for the species, which faces critical threats in the wild.

Birth Details and First Moments

Kindia began showing signs of labor at around 8:15 AM last Sunday. After a few hours, the calf's feet emerged, and after 1.5 hours of active labor, the baby was born. Within just 15 minutes, the calf attempted to stand, and by a few hours later, it was confidently navigating its enclosure. The calf was seen nursing approximately 4.5 hours after birth, a positive sign for its health and development.

The zoo has not yet named the calf, but confirms it is doing well alongside its mother. This is Kindia's third calf, following the successful raising of her daughter Penelope in 2018. The zoo's team is monitoring both mother and calf around the clock during these critical early days.

Conservation Significance

The birth of a pygmy hippo calf is not just a celebration; it's a vital step in conservation. Pygmy hippos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List. With only an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 individuals left in the wild, every birth counts.

Dolf DeJong, CEO of the Toronto Zoo, emphasized the importance of this birth: "Welcoming a pygmy hippo calf is far more than a celebration of new life. Pygmy hippos are endangered, and their wild populations continue to decline due to habitat loss and human pressures. This birth represents the critical role modern accredited zoos play in conservation, scientific collaboration, and maintaining healthy populations that contribute to the long-term survival of the species."

Pygmy Hippo vs. Common Hippo: Key Differences

Pygmy hippos are much smaller than their common hippo relatives. While adult pygmy hippos weigh between 330lb and 660lb and stand about 2.5ft tall, common hippos can weigh up to 3,300lb and stand over 5ft tall. Additionally, pygmy hippos are native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, whereas common hippos are found in rivers and lakes across sub-Saharan Africa.

Challenges and Hope for the Future

The zoo noted that calf survival for pygmy hippos can be challenging, but Kindia has a proven track record. "Kindia successfully raised her daughter Penelope in 2018, and calf survival for this species can be challenging," the zoo said. "Our team will continue to closely monitor both mom and calf around the clock during these important first days to ensure they continue to progress well together."

This birth is a testament to the dedication of zookeepers and the importance of accredited zoos in preserving endangered species. By participating in cooperative breeding programs, zoos like Toronto's help maintain genetic diversity and provide a safety net against extinction.
