The Pentagon's controversial Iran war casualty reclassification has sparked outrage among veterans who call it a huge disrespect to fallen service members. A quiet weekend update to the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) introduced a new category labeled "Overseas Operations" for personnel killed and wounded starting July 7, effectively splitting the count from the beginning of the US-Israel war on Iran. This move adds more than 140 wounded service members but reclassifies four killed in action by Iranian forces under the new category, including 1st Lt Tyler James Feehan, Pvt Isabella Gonzales, Sgt Angel S Rampersad, and Sgt Michael Emmanuel Swinton.
Veterans Respond to the Reclassification
Retired US Rear Admiral Michael E Smith, founder of National Security Leaders for America, called the change "ludicrous." He stated, "To claim that they weren’t killed as a result of the war – oh, it was just overseas operations – is just blatant disregard." Tristeza Ordex, a US Marine Corps veteran and national organizer at VoteVets, emphasized that the issue is about accountability, not just numbers. She recalled attending ramp ceremonies in Afghanistan and highlighted the emotional impact on families, especially for Pvt Gonzales, a 19-year-old from Carrollton, Texas.

What the New Category Means
The Department of Defense, renamed the Department of War under the Trump administration, now uses "Overseas Operations" for casualties that occur outside of designated war zones. Critics argue this undermines the sacrifice of those killed in action while serving in Iran-related operations. The change mirrors previous attempts to obscure the human cost of military engagements.
| Category | Previous Classification | New Classification |
|---|---|---|
| Killed in Action (Iran) | War casualty | Overseas Operations |
| Wounded in Action | War casualty | Overseas Operations (if after July 7) |
| Total Added | 0 | 140+ wounded |
Key Takeaways from the Controversy
- Lack of accountability: Veterans say the reclassification erases the true cost of the Iran war.
- Disrespect to families: Relatives of fallen service members feel their loved ones are not honored properly.
- Political implications: The change may be part of a broader attempt to downplay military casualties.
- Historical precedent: Similar reclassifications have occurred in past conflicts.
