US influencer Sara Gilson was tragically killed by her husband after publicly accusing him of child sexual abuse. Her ex-husband Lyle Landers revealed that she "couldn't seem to get away" from Jeremiah Duffy despite multiple protective orders. The case underscores the lethal risks of domestic violence and the failures of legal protections.
The Tragic Timeline of Abuse
Gilson, a social media influencer, posted a TikTok video on July 11 accusing Duffy of abusing children. Just twelve days later, police received a frantic call from Gilson, followed by a gunshot. Officers found both Gilson and Duffy dead from gunshot wounds to the head—police suspect Duffy killed her then turned the gun on himself.

Court records show Gilson filed for protective orders in 2021 and again this year. Judges dismissed the earlier ones because she didn't appear in court. The most recent order, granted just weeks before her death, required Duffy to stay 100 yards away. However, the system failed to prevent the tragedy.
Protective Orders: A Flawed Shield
The case highlights how protective orders can be ineffective if not strictly enforced. In Gilson's situation, the judge ordered Duffy out of the home, but he still had access to a firearm. A separate protective order was sought by the mother of a 15-year-old girl, alleging Duffy—a basketball coach—had inappropriate contact with her daughter.
| Protective Order Filing | Year | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| First order by Gilson | 2021 | Dismissed (no court appearance) |
| Second order by Gilson | 2021 | Dismissed (no court appearance) |
| Third order by Gilson | 2024 | Granted |
| Order by teenager's mother | 2024 | Pending |
Key Warning Signs of Lethal Domestic Abuse
Landers said he begged for five years to help Gilson escape. Domestic violence experts note that threatening suicide, possessing a firearm, and escalating accusations are major red flags. Gilson wrote in her application that Duffy had threatened suicide and owned a gun.
- Victim expresses fear of partner's suicide or homicide
- Partner's access to firearms
- Repeated protective order violations
- Isolation from friends and family
- Escalation of threats after public accusations
