In a surprising twist ahead of the World Cup final, many Latin Americans are rooting for Spain over Argentina, citing racist incidents by a minority of Argentine fans and growing regional rivalries. Brazilian journalist Julia Duailibi captured this sentiment in her column for O Globo, admitting she could not support neighboring Argentina due to the “racist scenes” and the silence of the majority. This shift marks a departure from the traditional solidarity for Latin American teams against European opponents.
Why Latin Americans Are Turning Against Argentina
According to Nicolás Cabrera, an Argentine sociologist and anthropologist, the change stems from multiple factors. Argentina’s recent dominance—reaching three of the past four World Cup finals—has bred resentment among neighbors like Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile, who have suffered early exits. Brazil, for instance, hasn’t reached the final since 2002.

The Role of Racism in the World Cup Final
Racist chants and gestures by a minority of Argentine fans have alienated many across the region. Duailibi noted that these actions “turned my stomach,” reflecting a broader disgust. This has fueled support for Spain, a European team, as a protest against such behavior.
| Factor | Impact on Latin American Support |
|---|---|
| Racist incidents by Argentine fans | Strongly negative; drives support for Spain |
| Argentina’s recent success | Increases rivalry; reduces regional solidarity |
| Early exits of Brazil and others | Heightens frustration; shifts allegiance |
