Nigel Farage Donations Inquiry Called Establishment Stitch-Up 2026

The Reform UK donations inquiry has been branded an 'establishment stitch-up' by party councillors, following internal briefing documents that instruct local representatives to dismiss the Metropolitan police investigation as a political attack. The controversy centers on £500,000 in donations from Fiona Cottrell, mother of crypto-gambler and convicted fraudster George Cottrell, a close friend of party leader Nigel Farage.

How the Donations Inquiry Unfolded

According to leaked briefings obtained by The Times, Reform UK councillors are told to respond to questions about the police probe by stating: "It is now clear that the establishment will try anything to stop us." The party also instructed members to claim that "the British people are tired of the establishment media doing anything they can to stop Reform." These directives come as the Metropolitan Police investigates whether the £500,000 donation violated electoral law.

The Role of Crypto and Controversial Figures

Fiona Cottrell's son, George Cottrell—known as "Posh George"—is a crypto-gambler with a fraud conviction. The crypto donations link deepens as The Guardian revealed in April that Farage received a £5 million gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before the last election. That transaction is now the subject of a standards inquiry, while the Conservatives have asked HMRC to investigate whether Farage should have paid tax on the gift.

Plummeting Popularity and Political Fallout

New YouGov polling reveals that Nigel Farage's net favourability rating has dropped to -46, with only 22% of people viewing him positively versus 68% negatively. This is the joint lowest level in the decade the pollster has tracked his popularity. The figures are comparable to Boris Johnson's slump after the first 'partygate' revelations (-42 in December 2021) and Keir Starmer just before his resignation (-45). Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is also enjoying a popularity boost, further squeezing Reform UK's electoral prospects.

Key Takeaways

• Reform UK councillors are instructed to frame the police inquiry as a biased establishment move.
• The donations involve crypto-linked funds from Fiona Cottrell and Christopher Harborne.
• Farage faces multiple inquiries over financial disclosures and tax implications.
• YouGov polling shows Farage's favourability at an all-time low, threatening Reform UK's momentum.
