Gen X is drinking more alcohol even as younger Americans cut back, according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The research reveals a striking generational divide in alcohol consumption patterns across the United States.

For the first time since before the pandemic, the overall percentage of US adults who drink any alcohol decreased between 2022 and 2024. However, adults aged 50 to 64—roughly corresponding with Generation X—were the only age group where drinking continued to increase. Even more concerning, heavy drinking among this demographic is on the rise.

Gen X Alcohol Consumption Trends: A Closer Look

The study tracked alcohol use before, during, and after the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2018, 66% of US adults consumed alcohol. By 2020, that number jumped to 69% and remained elevated. While younger generations have since reduced their intake, Gen X has not followed suit.

Dr. Brian P. Lee, a hepatologist and liver transplant specialist at Keck Medicine of USC, led the study. He noted that people in their 50s and early 60s were already a group of concern for alcohol-related health risks. “We are seeing the highest increases in heavy drinking,” Lee said. “That combination is particularly concerning.”

The trend is not just about more people drinking; it's about more people drinking heavily. This poses significant health risks, including liver disease, heart problems, and certain cancers.

Why Younger Americans Are Cutting Back on Alcohol

In contrast to Gen X, younger adults—particularly those under 40—are drinking less. This shift has been attributed to a variety of factors, including increased health awareness, changing social norms, and the rise of sober-curious lifestyles. Many younger people are opting for non-alcoholic alternatives and prioritizing mental and physical well-being.

This generational shift is also impacting the bar and nightlife industry. As younger generations move away from booze, many bars have struggled to stay open. Gen X drinkers are inadvertently helping keep these businesses afloat, but at a potential cost to their own health.

Health Risks of Heavy Drinking for Gen X

Heavy drinking is defined as consuming more than 14 drinks per week for men and more than 7 drinks per week for women. For Gen X, this pattern can accelerate age-related health issues. The liver, in particular, is vulnerable; alcohol-related liver disease often develops silently over years.

Other risks include high blood pressure, stroke, and cognitive decline. According to the latest science, there is no safe level of alcohol consumption when it comes to cancer risk. Even moderate drinking can increase the risk of breast and colon cancer.

Comparison of Drinking Patterns by Age Group

Age Group Drinking Trend (2022-2024) Heavy Drinking Trend
Under 40 Decreasing Decreasing
40-49 Stable Stable
50-64 (Gen X) Increasing Increasing
65+ Stable Stable

Key Takeaways for Gen X and Beyond

  • Gen X is the only age group where alcohol consumption and heavy drinking are increasing.
  • Younger Americans are drinking less, driving a cultural shift away from alcohol.
  • Heavy drinking poses serious health risks, especially for adults over 50.
  • Bars are struggling as younger generations cut back, but Gen X is keeping them open.
  • Reducing alcohol intake can improve health outcomes at any age.

What Can Be Done?

Public health experts recommend screening for alcohol use in primary care settings, especially for middle-aged and older adults. Brief interventions and counseling can help reduce heavy drinking. For Gen X, understanding the risks and making small changes—like participating in Dry January or choosing alcohol-free days—can make a big difference.

The study's findings highlight the need for targeted public health messages that resonate with Gen X. While younger generations are embracing sobriety, older adults may need more support to recognize and address their drinking habits.

FAQ

What is considered heavy drinking?

Heavy drinking is typically defined as consuming more than 14 drinks per week for men and more than 7 drinks per week for women. Binge drinking—having 5 or more drinks on one occasion for men, or 4 or more for women—also falls under heavy drinking.

Why is Gen X drinking more?

The study does not provide a definitive reason, but experts suggest that pandemic-related stress, social norms, and coping mechanisms may play a role. Gen X may also have more disposable income and fewer social pressures to abstain compared to younger generations.

What are the health risks of heavy drinking for Gen X?

Heavy drinking increases the risk of liver disease, heart disease, stroke, and several types of cancer. For adults over 50, these risks are compounded by the natural aging process, making it even more important to moderate alcohol intake.
