Search and Rescue Dog Poppy: The Clever Labrador Saving Lives 2026

Meet Poppy, the search and rescue dog whose curious nature and clever mind have made her an invaluable member of a missing persons search team. When her owner, a Special Operations Response Team paramedic, first brought home a nine-week-old black Labrador from Callander, Scotland, little did they know she would soon become a colleague. Poppy's journey from family pet to life-saving search dog is a testament to the power of working dogs and the deep bond between humans and animals.

From Family Pet to Search and Rescue Dog

Poppy joined the family as a furry bundle of joy, but her exceptional intelligence and empathy quickly became apparent. Her owner, who works in search and rescue, decided to involve Poppy in search operations when she was just one year old. "We knew it would play to her strengths," her owner recalls. Poppy took to the training immediately, showcasing her natural aptitude for finding people in various environments.

Training a Search and Rescue Dog

Training a search and rescue dog like Poppy involves rigorous exercises to hone their skills. Volunteers hide along riverbanks, in woods, beside lochs, and canals, and the dogs are sent to find them. Unlike some search dogs, Poppy doesn't need a scent article; she is trained to search without needing to smell someone's scent from an item such as clothing. This makes her highly versatile in different scenarios.

Her curious nature is a major asset. She loves exploring undergrowth, sniffing out scents, and finding hidden objects. This drive is what makes her so effective in the field.
