The France vs England third-place playoff in Miami is a fixture steeped in World Cup history, often called the game nobody wants to play but delivering unexpected drama. This bronze final, rebranded for modern audiences, pits two football giants against each other with pride and personal accolades on the line.
History of the Third-Place Playoff
The third-place playoff, or TPPO, debuted in 1934 when Germany defeated Austria 3-2 amid tense geopolitics. By 1938, Brazil showcased their flair with a 4-2 win over Sweden, and in 1958, France routed West Germany 6-3 in a nine-goal classic. Just Fontaine scored four goals that day, using the fixture to claim the Golden Boot—a tradition continued by Thomas Müller, Davor Suker, and Toto Schillaci.

Why This Game Matters
Despite its reputation as a consolation match, the TPPO boasts a higher goals-per-game average than the final and has never gone to penalties. For teams like Poland, Chile, and Belgium, winning third place set new national records. Belgium’s 2-0 victory over England in 2018 earned a heroes’ welcome home, proving the result can resonate deeply.
