Tour de France 2026: Vingegaard Crashes Out, Evenepoel Wins Stage 2026

The Tour de France 2026 delivered a day of bewildering drama as Jonas Vingegaard crashed out and Remco Evenepoel won stage 15. The double Tour champion, who also won this year's Giro d'Italia, climbed gingerly into a race ambulance with his right arm in a sling after falling on the approach to the Alpine climb of Plateau de Solaison. This shocking development reshaped the race leaderboard and set the stage for an intense final week in the Alps.

Vingegaard's Crash and the Doping Control Connection

Jonas Vingegaard was woken up at 2am by the International Testing Agency (ITA) for unexpected nocturnal doping controls prior to stage 15. Both Vingegaard and race leader Tadej Pogacar were subjected to these tests as the race headed into the Savoyarde Alps. Speaking before the stage, Vingegaard noted, "We are competitors and also kind of friends. The tour will not be the same without him. It got me thinking that maybe you are a little less concentrated after the early doping. I don't blame that but it could be connected."

The crash occurred as the main peloton exited a roundabout in Bonneville, ending Vingegaard's race instantly. This incident has sparked debate about the impact of early-morning testing on rider performance and safety.

Remco Evenepoel's Dominant Stage Win

Remco Evenepoel, riding for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, showcased a rocket-like performance to claim victory on stage 15. His win was a significant morale boost for the team, as one observer noted, "Remco sometimes needs a bit of a morale boost and today he was a rocket and is going to be a pain in the arse next week too." Evenepoel finished with a time of 4:23:09, outpacing the competition on the grueling Alpine terrain.

Stage 15 Results and General Classification

The general classification after stage 15 saw Tadej Pogacar maintain the yellow jersey with a lead of 5 minutes over Evenepoel. Isaac Del Toro moved into third place, while Paul Seixas and Florian Lipowitz rounded out the top five.
