Arsenal Defensive Crisis: Key Transfer Targets and Injury Updates 2026

Arsenal are stepping up their efforts to sign defensive cover after William Saliba's back injury and Jurriën Timber's groin problem left Mikel Arteta short of options. The Gunners lost the Emirates Cup to Borussia Dortmund 3-2, exposing defensive frailties. With the new Premier League season looming, Arteta faces a critical test in squad depth.

Arsenal's Injury Woes: Saliba and Timber Sidelined

William Saliba, a cornerstone of Arsenal's defense, is in rest mode for two weeks after aggravating a back injury during the World Cup. Arteta confirmed it will take "some time to heal," leaving the team without their star center-back. Meanwhile, Jurriën Timber is progressing but remains "weeks away" from a return, having missed most of last season's run-in with a persistent groin issue.

These absences forced Arteta to field Cristhian Mosquera alongside Gabriel Magalhães in the friendly loss. The performance highlighted a lack of cohesion, with defensive mistakes proving costly. The manager acknowledged the challenge: "We know we lost a massive player, the same with Jurriën."

Transfer Targets: Konsa and Romero on the Radar

Arsenal have already had a bid rejected for Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa. The England defender, valued at £60m, has less than two years left on his contract, and Arsenal are unwilling to meet that price. However, they are expected to return with a new offer, given his versatility to play at right-back.

Another name linked is Cristian Romero from Tottenham, but a move is extremely unlikely due to Spurs' reluctance to sell to their north London rivals. Arteta may need to explore other options, including younger talents or loan deals, to shore up the backline before the transfer window closes.

Comparing Konsa and Romero: Who Fits Better?

Konsa offers more flexibility and a realistic chance, while Romero is a top-tier but unattainable target. Arsenal's recruitment team must act swiftly.

Arteta's Tactical Adjustments Without Key Defenders

Arteta may rely on Gabriel Magalhães as the senior figure, pairing him with young Mosquera or even using Ben White in a central role. The manager has experience coping without Saliba, but the stats show a significant drop in performance. In matches without Saliba last season, Arsenal conceded more goals and won fewer points.

To mitigate this, Arteta could adopt a more cautious approach, with a deeper defensive line and additional midfield protection. The return of Thomas Partey will help, but a new signing remains crucial.

Key Takeaways for Arsenal Fans

• Saliba's injury is serious; he may miss several weeks, possibly months.
• Timber's return is still weeks away, leaving a thin squad.
• Konsa is the most viable target, but negotiations are tough.
• Romero is a dream signing, but Spurs won't sell to Arsenal.
• Arteta must adapt tactically to avoid early-season slip-ups.
