England suffered World Cup heartbreak on Wednesday night as Argentina scored two late goals to win 2-1 and book a place in the final. The dramatic comeback, led by Lionel Messi, left English fans devastated after Anthony Gordon had given them a 55th-minute lead. This match will be remembered as one of the most thrilling in recent tournament history, with Argentina now set to face Spain in the final.
How Argentina Turned the Game Around
Argentina's equalizer came in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández unleashed a superb strike from the edge of England's penalty area. Just seven minutes later, Lautaro Martínez scored the winner with a close-range header in injury time, with Messi providing the assists for both goals. The comeback silenced the English crowd and sparked jubilant celebrations among the Argentine players.

Messi's Final World Cup Appearance
This will be Lionel Messi's final appearance on the biggest stage, adding extra significance to Argentina's victory. Messi led the celebrations after the final whistle, with some squad members displaying a controversial banner referencing the Falkland Islands. The gesture may lead to disciplinary action from FIFA, but it did not overshadow Messi's masterclass in playmaking.
England's Tactical Mistakes
England had been minutes from making history by reaching their first men's World Cup final since 1966. However, manager Thomas Tuchel's defensive substitutions were heavily criticized. After Gordon gave England the lead, Tuchel brought on three defenders and switched to a back five, hoping to preserve the 1-0 advantage. The strategy backfired spectacularly.
Key Tactical Changes
- Gordon substituted in the 72nd minute for defender Ezri Konsa
- Switch to a 5-3-2 formation
- Two more defenders, Dan Burn and Nico O'Reilly, introduced in the 82nd minute
- England failed to maintain possession or create counter-attacks
Captain Harry Kane, who has six goals in the tournament, admitted England became too defensive after taking the lead. "Once we went 1-0 up we seemed to just sit back and invite pressure," Kane said. "Against a team like Argentina, that's a dangerous game to play."
Match Statistics Comparison
| Statistic | England | Argentina |
|---|---|---|
| Possession | 42% | 58% |
| Shots on Target | 3 | 7 |
| Corners | 4 | 8 |
| Fouls Committed | 12 | 9 |
| Yellow Cards | 2 | 1 |
The statistics clearly show Argentina dominated the match, especially in the second half. England's defensive approach allowed Argentina to pile on pressure, leading to the two late goals that sealed England's fate.
What's Next for England
England will now face France in the third-place playoff on Saturday. Kane remains in the race for the Golden Boot with six goals, two behind Messi and Kylian Mbappé. The match offers a chance for England to salvage some pride, but the pain of this defeat will linger for years.
