England's white-ball cricket success against India has raised concerns about a deepening divide with the Test setup, as the team prepares for the Hundred. The recent series victories in T20 and ODI formats showcase a resilient squad, but the underlying issues in Test cricket remain unresolved.
The White-Ball Triumph
England's limited-overs team, led by Brendon McCullum and Harry Brook, secured impressive series wins over India, who currently hold the No. 1 ranking in both formats. The T20 series ended 4-0, while the ODI series was won 2-1 after a hard-fought comeback from 1-0 down.

Key Performances
The ODI victories in Cardiff and Lord's highlighted England's adaptability. Cardiff was a low-scoring dogfight relying on Joe Root's enduring class, while Lord's saw a high-scoring gunfight on a flat pitch. This variety in approach demonstrates the team's depth.
| Format | Opponent | Result | Key Player |
|---|---|---|---|
| T20 | India | 4-0 win | Harry Brook |
| ODI | India | 2-1 win | Joe Root |
The Test Cricket Crisis
Despite the white-ball success, Test cricket remains a priority for the ECB, as stated by chief executive Richard Gould. However, the first half of the season was a shambles: a 2-1 defeat by New Zealand led to McCullum's removal from his Test coaching role, and captain Ben Stokes retired, leaving the team without a coach or captain.
Key Takeaways
- White-ball victories mask deeper issues in Test cricket.
- Leadership instability threatens long-term planning.
- India's absence of Jasprit Bumrah in the ODI decider was a bonus.
- England's variety in playing conditions is a strength.
Future Implications
The divide between white-ball and Test setups risks baking in a fragmented approach. While McCullum's retention for limited-overs teams was controversial, the results justify the decision. Yet, the Test team's future remains uncertain.
