Former Morrisons delivery driver Joe Dean delivered a stunning performance to win the last-chance qualifier for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The 32-year-old, who once drove a van for a living, now prepares to tee off in golf's oldest major after a dramatic playoff-style shootout.
The Final Spot: How Joe Dean Secured His Open Berth
In a new R&A innovation, a dozen players competed over 18 holes for the final place in the 154th Open Championship. Dean's round of 68 included a greenside bunker shot that landed softly and a nerve-wracking 4-foot putt on the last hole. He edged Andrew Wilson by one shot, while South African Aldrich Potgieter missed a birdie chance to force a playoff.

Comparing the Last-Chance Qualifier to Traditional Open Entry
| Method | Details | Number of Spots |
|---|---|---|
| Last-Chance Qualifier | 12 players, 18 holes at Birkdale | 1 |
| Final Qualifying | Multiple courses, 36 holes | Several |
| Exemptions | World ranking, past champions | Many |
This new format brought excitement to an otherwise quiet practice day, with strong galleries following every shot. Dean's victory marks the first time since 1962 at Troon that an Open competitor qualified on the tournament course.
What This Means for the Open Championship
The R&A's gamble paid off, producing compelling sport when attention often shifts to top stars like Scottie Scheffler. Dean, who marries his fiancée Emily this week, now faces a hectic few days before teeing off in the major. His story resonates with everyday golfers who dream of competing at the highest level.
