The Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 is set to begin with a significantly scaled-back format, as the city steps in to host after Victoria, Australia, withdrew. With a budget of just £150m and only 500,000 tickets available, this edition is a far cry from the 2014 games that drew 1.5 million spectators.
Why the Commonwealth Games Are Coming to Glasgow
When Victoria pulled out due to rising costs, Glasgow offered to host the games at short notice. The city is relying on compensation from Victoria and commercial partnerships to fund the event. Only 10 of the 17 original sports will be featured, with events like swimming and athletics still drawing crowds.

Fan Reaction and Local Sentiment
Glaswegians have mixed feelings. Many still cherish memories of the 2014 games, which were widely praised for their energy and atmosphere. “It’s nice when the city gets busy,” said Joshua Lamb, a law student who attended the swimming events as a child. Yet some locals note the lack of fanfare, with merchandise sales initially slow.

How Glasgow Is Preparing
A dramatic fire recently closed part of the city centre, including Glasgow Central station, but the area has reopened just in time. The city is working hard to ensure the games are a success, even with a pared-down program. Fewer events mean a more intimate experience for attendees.
What This Means for Visitors
- Smaller crowds and easier access to venues
- Lower ticket prices compared to 2014
- Focus on core sports like swimming, athletics, and cycling
- Opportunity to experience Glasgow’s revitalized city centre
Looking Ahead
Despite the reduced scale, the games are expected to boost local tourism and showcase Scotland’s resilience. As one local put it, “After the World Cup, people are looking at Scotland for good fun.” The 2026 Commonwealth Games may be smaller, but they represent a triumph of community spirit.
