Looking for a creative and eco-friendly furniture project? This DIY cardboard armchair is a fantastic way to recycle a corrugated cardboard box into a unique piece for your home. It's a simple, budget-friendly idea that adds a touch of handmade charm to any room. Before you start, consider upgrading your home improvement tools for a smoother build.
Materials and Preparation for Your Cardboard Armchair
To build this cardboard armchair, you'll need a large corrugated cardboard box. Before assembly, the box is a flat sheet just a few millimeters thick, usually rectangular. By gluing 6 of these flat sheets together to form 4 solid elements (24 sheets total), you can construct a cozy armchair. The seat support is made by gluing three fir strips to the two side profiles and the backrest.

Creating the Backrest, Seat, and Side Profiles
The backrest, seat, and two side profiles of the DIY cardboard armchair are created by gluing together the flattened boxes (6 per element) using vinyl glue. The strength of the vinyl glue bond is directly proportional to the pressure applied between the elements. To achieve this, place a weight on top of each stack; between the last cardboard sheet and the weight, a wooden panel helps distribute pressure evenly. For a sturdy final piece, you might also explore garden supplies like clamps to hold pieces together while drying.
Assembling the Armchair Structure
The seat supports of the cardboard armchair are made by gluing three strips at about mid-height of the side profiles and the backrest. Now, assemble the DIY cardboard armchair by gluing the backrest to the side profiles and place the seat so that it rests against the strips. Once complete, this eco-friendly chair pairs beautifully with rugs or curtains to soften the look.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long does it take to build a cardboard armchair?
The assembly itself takes about 2-3 hours, but you'll need to allow 24 hours for the glue to fully cure under pressure. Plan your project around a weekend.
What type of glue works best?
Vinyl glue (PVA) is ideal because it creates a strong bond and dries clear. For extra durability, you can reinforce joints with a home improvement adhesive.
Can this chair hold an adult's weight?
Yes, when properly constructed with 24 layers of corrugated cardboard and fir strip supports, the chair can comfortably support an adult. For added comfort, add cushions from outdoor patio furniture collections.
How do I waterproof a cardboard chair?
To use it outdoors, apply a waterproof sealant or varnish. You can also place it under a pergola or gazebo for protection.
Can I paint or decorate the cardboard?
Absolutely! Use acrylic paint or decoupage techniques. Finish with a clear coat for longevity. Match your design with wall decor for a unified room aesthetic.
