Making a DIY picture frame is a great way to test your basic skills and maybe even teach your kids a fun craft. Here is a floral version that brings spring right onto your walls.

Spring is just around the corner, and whether real or artificial, we are used to seeing flowers in vases. But they rarely get displayed on the wall! Let's change all that by creating a "blooming" DIY picture frame using recycled materials and tin cans (coffee cans work great) that hold water well for fresh-cut flowers. Calla lilies, daffodils, lily of the valley, and other blooms become our artistic representations, in perfect harmony with nature and our DIY preferences.
What You Need to Make a DIY Picture Frame
- Various picture frames, even reclaimed ones
- Aluminum tin cans, reclaimed from food packaging
- A sheet of 4 mm thick plywood for the back
- Metal triangles for fastening
- Paper clips (binder clips)
- Sandpaper
- Colored acrylic enamel paints
- Picture hanging hardware
The DIY Picture Frame
- Apply a coat of colored enamel paint over the entire frame (we used light blue). Apply multiple coats for a better finish.
- After cutting the plywood to fit the frame, paint it with black slate acrylic enamel.
- Attach the plywood panel to the frame using the small metal triangles.
Preparing the Tin Cans
- Using the black slate enamel, paint the tin cans (place them on a wooden stick for easier handling).
- With a hammer and nail, punch a hole in the cans. Do this on a piece of wood.
- Insert the paper clip (from inside the can) into the hole—this will be used to attach the container to the frame.
- Insert the paper clip into a pre-drilled hole in the plywood panel (use a drill with an 8 mm bit).
- Pull the clip through from the back and spread the two metal wings open to secure it.
Once your cans are attached, simply fill them with water and your favorite fresh flowers. This project is a wonderful way to combine wall decor with natural elements. For a cohesive look, consider pairing your floral frame with a complementary rug or coordinating curtains to tie the room together.
Tips for Your Floral Frame Project
- Choose the right frame: A deeper frame works best to hold the cans. Browse mirrors and frames for inspiration on styles that match your decor.
- Seal the cans: Make sure your painted cans are fully dry before adding water to prevent rust.
- Mix flowers: Combine different heights and colors for a stunning arrangement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use artificial flowers instead of fresh ones?
Absolutely! Artificial flowers work perfectly and require no water or maintenance. This is a great option if you want a permanent display. You can also incorporate outdoor decor elements like faux greenery for a versatile look.
What type of paint is best for the tin cans?
Acrylic enamel paint works best because it adheres well to metal and provides a durable, water-resistant finish. For a complete home improvement project, use the same paint to refresh other small metal items around your home.
How do I hang the finished frame?
Use standard picture hanging hardware on the back of the plywood panel. Make sure the frame is securely anchored to the wall, especially if using fresh flowers and water, as it will be heavier than a standard picture frame.
Can I use this idea for other rooms?
Yes! This concept works beautifully in any room. For a kitchen herb garden, use small cans and hang the frame near your kitchen island or cart. In a bedroom, it makes a lovely headboard accent when placed above a bed or nightstand.
How do I prevent water damage to the frame?
Ensure the cans are watertight and check for any leaks before hanging. Applying a clear sealant to the inside of the frame can also help protect the wood. Consider using a storage bench or console table underneath to catch any accidental drips.
