As J.K. Jerome wrote over a century ago about cyclists, motorcyclists also fall into two categories: those who prefer to ride and want nothing to do with cylinders, chains, bolts, and washers, and those who would spend all their time under their beloved machine, greasing, adjusting, and fine-tuning every tiny detail. While the division is a bit drastic and exaggerated, there is a kernel of truth to it. It is to the second category of enthusiasts that our reader Alessandro Porcu proposes his DIY motorcycle stand, clearly inspired by those used in competitive sports and designed to lift both dirt bikes and street bikes off the ground just enough to change tires, clean the chain, check joints and bearings, and more.

The safety of the DIY motorcycle stand is based on the principle of overcoming a "dead point." The motorcycle is lifted by a lever system shaped so that the weight of the vehicle, once past the fulcrum, bears down on the lever itself, preventing it from rising back up.

What You Need to Build a DIY Motorcycle Stand

  • 25×25 mm square tube for the base frame, lifting post housing, horizontal support sleeves, and accessory feet.
  • 20×20 mm square tube for the lever uprights, lifting posts, and horizontal support arms.
  • 20×30 mm square tube for the horizontal arm of the accessory.
  • 1/2" hydraulic pipe for the lever and the accessory.
  • 10×20 mm flat iron for stiffening ties.
  • 30×30 mm L-iron for horizontal supports.
  • 4 swivel casters, 50 mm with plate mount (2 with brake).
  • Bolts, nuts, washers, various pieces for connections and reinforcements.
  • Rubber gaskets.
  • Cut-off saw, grinder, welder, drill, wrenches, tape measure, square, paintbrush.

Front Motorcycle Stand

For the front stand, start by cutting and welding the base frame from 25×25 mm square tube. The frame should be wide enough to accommodate the front wheel. Weld two vertical lifting posts from 20×20 mm tube onto the base. The lever mechanism, made from 1/2" hydraulic pipe, connects to these posts. Attach the horizontal support arms, made from 20×20 mm tube and L-iron, to the lever. These arms will cradle the lower fork legs or the steering stem. Ensure all welds are strong and smooth. Add rubber gaskets to the support arms to protect the motorcycle's finish. Install the swivel casters on the base frame for easy movement. For a complete workshop setup, consider adding home improvement essentials like a sturdy workbench or tool storage.

Rear Motorcycle Stand

The rear stand follows a similar principle but is designed to lift the swingarm. Construct the base frame from 25×25 mm square tube. The lifting posts and lever are made from 20×20 mm tube and 1/2" hydraulic pipe, respectively. The horizontal support arms should be fitted with rubber pads or hooks that engage with the swingarm spools or the axle area. Weld stiffening ties from 10×20 mm flat iron to reinforce the structure. This design allows you to easily lift the rear wheel for chain maintenance or tire changes. While working on your bike, you might also appreciate having a comfortable office chair for your garage desk or a durable storage bench to keep tools organized.

Building the Stand Requires 20 Welds

Constructing a sturdy DIY motorcycle stand involves approximately 20 precise welds. Each joint must be clean and fully penetrated to ensure the stand can safely support the weight of the motorcycle. Use a good quality welder and take your time to align all parts correctly. A lighting upgrade in your workspace, such as bright LED shop lights, will help you see the weld puddle clearly and produce better results.

DIY Lift with Scissor Jack

An alternative approach is to integrate a scissor jack into your design. Build a sturdy base platform from 25×25 mm square tube. Mount a heavy-duty scissor jack (rated for at least 500 kg) to the center of the platform. Weld a lifting plate to the top of the jack that will contact the motorcycle's frame or engine cradle. This design offers a more controlled lift and can be easier to operate. For added stability, consider using home improvement supplies like heavy-duty casters or adjustable leveling feet.

How to Build a Motorcycle Lift Platform

A simpler solution is a lift platform that the motorcycle rides onto. Build a low-profile ramp and platform from 25×25 mm square tube and sheet metal. The platform should have a mechanism, such as a hinged ramp or a locking pin, to secure the motorcycle once it's in place. This type of lift is excellent for storage or for performing basic maintenance. To keep your garage tidy, a shed or greenhouse might be useful for storing seasonal items, freeing up space for your motorcycle projects.

Another Interesting Solution for a DIY Motorcycle Lift

For those who want a more advanced project, consider a pneumatic or hydraulic lift. This involves mounting a hydraulic bottle jack or a pneumatic cylinder to a custom-built frame. The frame can be designed to lift the motorcycle from the center stand or from the swingarm. This type of lift is very convenient but requires more complex fabrication and plumbing. While you're at it, upgrading your outdoor patio furniture or adding a pergola to your backyard can create a relaxing space to enjoy after a day in the garage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a DIY motorcycle stand safe?

DIY project photo
Yes, if built correctly with proper materials and welding techniques. Always test the stand with a light load first and ensure it is on a level surface. Never work under a motorcycle supported only by a DIY stand without additional safety blocks.

What type of steel should I use?

Square tube steel in the dimensions listed above (25×25 mm, 20×20 mm, etc.) is ideal. Mild steel is easy to weld and strong enough for most motorcycles. Avoid using thin-walled tubing.

Can I use this stand for any motorcycle?

The designs shown are for dirt bikes and street bikes. For heavier cruisers or touring bikes, you may need to reinforce the design with thicker steel or a different lifting mechanism. Always check the weight rating of your materials.

Do I need a welder?

Yes, a MIG or stick welder is essential for this project. If you don't have one, you can consider a bolt-together design, but it will be less rigid. For other DIY projects, you might find home improvement tools like a good drill or saw equally useful.

Where can I find the casters?

Swivel casters with a brake are available at most hardware stores or online. Look for ones rated for at least 50 kg each. While shopping, you might also want to browse rugs or curtains to refresh your home decor.
