The Rise and Fall of Steves in the AFL
In the early 1990s, more than 25 Steves, Stephens, and Stevens graced AFL fields. Names like Stephen Silvagni, a Hall of Famer who played from the 1980s through early 2000s, were common. Today, that number has dwindled to just one. The decline is part of a cyclical pattern in naming conventions, where names like Jack, Tom, Sam, and Lachlan now dominate.
