Rory McIlroy Eyes Repeat PGA Championship Victory at Wentworth 2026

Rory McIlroy is on the brink of another PGA Championship victory at Wentworth, aiming to repeat history as the reigning Masters champion. With 18 holes remaining, McIlroy sits two shots behind leaders Filippo Celli and Manuel Elvira, both surprise contenders ranked outside the world's top 290.

McIlroy's Quest for Symmetry

In September 2025, McIlroy claimed a second Irish Open title at the K Club, five months after winning the Masters. Now, he seeks a second PGA Championship crown to mirror last year's success. "I'd certainly like to win again," McIlroy said. "The Masters feels like quite a long time ago. I have had half-chances here and there since then, but tomorrow is a great opportunity."

A Historic Connection to Wentworth

McIlroy's history at Wentworth spans 27 years, beginning as a 10-year-old spectator. "It is a tournament and a place that means a lot to me," he reflected. "I first came here as a 10-year-old to watch the World Match Play with my mum and dad. I have played this tournament so many times, I have been able to win this event and now I have a house on the estate." His 2014 victory feels like a lifetime ago, but another win would cement his legacy.

Leaderboard Analysis: Unlikely Leaders

Filippo Celli (world No. 358) and Manuel Elvira (No. 294) lead at 13 under par after clutch birdies at the last. Alejandro del Rey and Johannes Veerman lurk close behind. McIlroy, at 11 under, remains within striking distance.

Key Takeaways for the Final Round

• McIlroy's experience at Wentworth could be decisive under pressure.
• Unlikely leaders Celli and Elvira face a daunting task holding off a major champion.
• Weather conditions may play a role, with forecasts suggesting wind.
• History awaits: A win would give McIlroy a second PGA Championship and continue his remarkable season.
