Isak Seals Liverpool Comeback as Brentford Finish with Nine Men 2026

Alexander Isak completed Liverpool’s comeback win as Brentford finished with nine men in a dramatic Premier League clash at Anfield. The Swedish striker struck in the 70th minute to seal a 2-1 victory after the visitors had taken a shock lead through Yehor Yarmolyuk’s early goal.

Match Overview: Liverpool vs Brentford

Liverpool hosted Brentford on Saturday evening knowing they needed a win to keep pace with the top four. Brentford, unbeaten in their opening three games, started brightly and took the lead in the 12th minute when Yarmolyuk headed home from a corner. The game turned just before half-time when Yarmolyuk was sent off for a headbutt on Jérémy Jacquet, reducing Brentford to ten men. Liverpool capitalised in the second half, with Victor Muñoz equalising before Isak’s winner.

Key Moments and Turning Points

The Red Card That Changed Everything

Yarmolyuk’s dismissal was the pivotal moment. The midfielder, who had been Brentford’s best player until then, reacted angrily to a challenge from Jacquet and headbutted the defender. Referee John Brooks had no hesitation in showing a straight red card. Brentford manager Keith Andrews was furious, but replays showed the decision was correct.

Second-Half Surge

With a man advantage, Liverpool dominated possession after the break. Florian Wirtz, who has struggled since his £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen, provided the assist for Muñoz’s equaliser in the 58th minute. Muñoz finished calmly after a slick passing move. Then, in the 70th minute, Bradley Barcola’s header from a corner found Isak, who volleyed home from close range. It was Barcola’s first assist for Liverpool.

Player Performances

Isak was the hero for Liverpool, but Wirtz’s performance was equally encouraging. The German playmaker showed glimpses of his best form, creating chances and linking play. Barcola, making his first start, was lively on the wing. For Brentford, Yarmolyuk’s red card overshadowed a spirited team display, and Vitaly Janelt’s late dismissal for a second yellow card compounded their misery.
