The Drover’s Wife Opera Review: Powerful Emotional Retelling 2026

The Drover’s Wife opera review reveals a powerfully emotional retelling of Leah Purcell’s story, blending Indigenous storytelling with operatic grandeur. This production, composed by George Palmer and staged by Opera Australia, transforms Henry Lawson’s classic bush tale into a postcolonial feminist western that resonates deeply with contemporary audiences.

An Operatic Adaptation That Honors Its Roots

Leah Purcell’s adaptation of The Drover’s Wife has evolved through stage play, novel, and film, but the opera version offers a unique ritualistic experience. The production opens with a whispered incantation and singing in Wiradjuri language, immediately signaling a ceremonial tone. Soprano Shauntai Abdul-Rahman’s call to listen, look, and learn sets the stage for a narrative that works on both intellect and emotion.

The story centers on Molly Johnson, sung by Nina Korbe, who spends several tense days protecting her children from a snake and menacing white intruders. With the help of Yadaka, a Guugu Yimithirr man on the run, Molly confronts colonial violence and asserts her agency. The operatic format amplifies the emotional stakes, making the truth-telling more visceral.

Music and Performance Elevate the Narrative

George Palmer’s composition, paired with powerful vocal performances, creates a haunting soundscape. The use of clap sticks and traditional dance elements integrates Indigenous culture seamlessly into the operatic form. Jeanette Fabila’s portrayal of an older woman in ceremonial headdress adds a layer of ancestral presence, while Marcus Corowa’s Yadaka brings depth and vulnerability.

The production’s ability to combine song, dance, and storytelling results in a holistic experience that engages the body as much as the mind. This is not merely entertainment; it is a form of cultural reckoning.
