The latest UK politics controversy involves shadow home secretary Chris Philp directly rejecting French authorities' explanation that shots fired from a naval vessel near his boat were part of a training exercise. Philp, who was filming migrants crossing the Channel, insists the gunfire was an attempt to intimidate him.
Chris Philp Confronts French Officials Over Channel Incident
While on a boat in the English Channel documenting migrant arrivals, Chris Philp heard shots from a nearby French naval vessel. French officials claim an officer was conducting a small-arms firing exercise and did not aim at Philp's boat. However, Philp told reporters that the French are "not telling the truth" and that the incident was designed to scare him off.

The shadow home secretary responded by posting extensive video footage on social media, arguing that France is "doing nothing" to prevent small boats from crossing. His actions have reignited debate over UK-France immigration cooperation and border security.
Broader Political Developments: Burnham, Badenoch, and McFadden
Alongside the Channel standoff, other political stories emerged. Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, unveiled plans to offer early, localized technical education in schools. Three teaching unions raised concerns, but Burnham countered that AI can write essays but cannot build trains, urging a shift from desk jobs to practical careers.
Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch called for emergency legislation to exclude serious offenders from the prisoner early release scheme scheduled for autumn. Meanwhile, Pat McFadden announced that parents on benefits could receive £4,500 per year if their child starts an apprenticeship, emphasizing that young people must engage with new support to find work.
Barclays revealed a 30% increase in its half-year bonus pool after rising profits, prompting calls for Andy Burnham to launch a tax raid on UK banks. Former education secretary Michael Gove criticized Burnham's vocational plans as “Labour re-introducing secondary moderns”, referring to the old system of academic and vocational school tracks.
