Pepper-spraying drones are being installed in several US schools as a controversial new tool to respond to school shooting attacks. The initiative, inspired by Ukraine war tactics, aims to quickly incapacitate shooters while law enforcement arrives. Campus Guardian Angel, a Texas-based company, provides the drones to multiple schools across Georgia, Florida, and Colorado.
How the Pepper-Spraying Drones Work
The drones are launched upon a verified threat and can be operated remotely from thousands of miles away. They feature two-way communication, allowing operators to engage verbally with a suspect or guide teachers and staff. Equipped with a front lance, they can break through untreated windows. Each drone carries a pepper launcher that fires pepper balls, along with sirens and air poppers to disorient the attacker.

Key Capabilities
- Flight time: Approximately 8 minutes per battery charge
- Frequency: Operates at 900 MHz for reliable communication
- Kinetic strike: Can deliver impact rounds to incapacitate a shooter
- Swarm tactics: Waves of 3–4 drones keep the attacker occupied until arrest
Comparison: Drones vs. Traditional School Security Measures
| Feature | Pepper-Spraying Drones | Traditional Security (SROs, Lockdowns) |
|---|---|---|
| Response time | Seconds to deploy after alert | Minutes for law enforcement arrival |
| Remote operation | Yes, from ops center | No, requires on-site presence |
| Verbal de-escalation | Built-in speakerphone | Limited to human interaction |
| Non-lethal force | Pepper balls & kinetic strikes | Typically relies on firearms |
| Cost | Subscription-based? Not disclosed | Annual salaries & training |
Controversy and Concerns
Critics argue that investing in pepper-spraying drones shifts focus away from preventing school shootings in the first place. Others question the reliability of battery life and the potential for false positives. However, proponents see it as a necessary layer of protection in an era of increasing gun violence.
FAQ
Can these drones be used indoors?
Yes, the drones are designed to fly through windows that lack ballistic film. They use a front lance to break glass and enter school buildings.
What happens if the drone runs out of battery?
Each drone has about 8 minutes of flight time. The company uses waves of 3–4 drones to maintain coverage while batteries are swapped or recharged.
Are there privacy concerns with these drones?
The drones are only activated after a verified threat, and two-way communication is limited to law enforcement and school staff. However, privacy advocates worry about potential misuse or surveillance.
The debate over pepper-spraying drones in schools continues as more districts evaluate this technology. Whether it becomes a standard security measure depends on cost, effectiveness, and public acceptance.
